On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR), WIIS Austria presents a one-day conference focused on the intersections between the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda and disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation in an effort to bridge the gap and connect the issues.

Although a gendered-approach to disarmament falls within the four pillars of the WPS agenda, disarmament is not explicitly mentioned in Resolution 1325 – except in the limited context of disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR). In fact, a gendered-approach is missing from most disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation frameworks.

As the world prepares to debate the WPS Agenda and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), it is vital to reflect on and suggest substantive ways to improve coherence and coordination among international frameworks in the field of peace and security.

This conference will address the future challenges in disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, illuminate where WPS and disarmament converge, and foster discussion on the impact feminist policy and a gendered-approach can have on these fields.
