Join us for this interactive talk with expert speaker Joana Cook. We will explore women's roles as violent militants and supporters in prominent terrorist organisations such as ISIS, and how gender shapes counterterrorism policy. How can women prevent violent extremism, and how should states respond to female foreign fighters after the fall of the Caliphate? The event will be on Zoom, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and discuss the topic with other participants. We look forward to seeing you there!

Women in War and International Politics is a women-led initiative by the Department of War Studies at King's College London. WIWIP showcases women's contributions to the field of security, connects female students and hosts both academic and social events. This event is open to all! Joana Cook is currently working as Assistant Professor of Terrorism and Political Violence at Leiden University. She is also a senior research fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and a teaching fellow in the Department of War Studies, King’s College London; Adjunct Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University; and a research affiliate with the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society.

She is the author of A Woman’s Place - tracing the evolution of women’s roles in U.S. counterterrorism efforts through the administrations of Presidents Bush, Obama, and Trump, examining key agencies like the U.S. Department of Defense, the Department of State, and USAID. Cook investigates how and why women have developed the roles they have, and interrogates U.S. counterterrorism practices in key countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen. Analysing conceptions of and responses to terrorists, she also examines how the evolving roles of women in Al-Qaeda and ISIS have impacted U.S. counterterrorism considerations.
