The world is facing an unprecedented global threat due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and it has underlined the urgent need for global action to address people’s basic requirements and necessities. Today the world is being asked to wash hands multiple times in a day, along with washing and sanitizing every object brought from outside and maintain social distancing at all times. The water consumption, as well as the wastewater generation all across the globe, has increased manifold. A huge amount of water is being used for handwashing all across the globe thereby posing a serious health threat wherever access to water, adequate water for sanitation, or inadequate sanitation itself is the challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed fundamental weaknesses in our systems and brought into limelight the issue of access to clean water and sanitation for the poor. In view of the current pandemic, the fate of SDG 6, “Ensure Availability and Sustainable Management of Water and Sanitation for All” becomes more critical. It has now become imperative to think about the poor who live in slum settlements, without access to water or sanitation in India and across the Globe, amidst this crisis.
The webinar aims to discover the means through which the cities are planning to cover the gaps with respect to water and sanitation specially for the poor; understanding the tools/plans/efforts that are required to make water accessible and manage the water crisis for the last mile along with the strategies that need to be undertaken to manage and maintain the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status; and examining the role and importance of Community Based Organizations, especially women and adolescent girls, in bringing access to clean water and sanitation infrastructure and driving behaviour change.
