David Duriesmith will discuss how masculinities that normalize, promote, and reward men’s use of violence after armed conflict has ceased represent an enduring challenge for the international community. Recognizing the importance of this challenge over the past 10 years, international actors such as the United Nations and key states have increasingly called for programs to address, engage, or enlist men in order to secure gender-just forms of peace. Interrogating the politics behind such initiatives, this seminar explores whether efforts to transform masculinities can facilitate peace. And, if they can, what kind of peace might they produce?
