Inaugural Meeting of the AfP Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Issues

Dec 18, 2019 | Alliance for Peacebuilding and Women of Color Advancing Peace, Security and Conflict Transformation
Washington, DC

As a community, we as peacebuilders are committed to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). We have recognized that DEI is not only the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do. Substantial research has shown that organizations that are more diverse and inclusive are more innovative and impactful. But somehow it is a difficult thing for many organizations – including those in the peacebuilding field -- to do this well. We aim to use the deliberations of this new committee to deepen our understanding of, commitment to and practice of DEI so that we incorporate these principles in all that we do – leadership, staffing, and programming. We intend to use our discussion to lead to a policy statement for AfP and perhaps serve as a model for other organizations. Our emphasis is and should be not only on what we want to achieve but on how to get there and stay there. DEI, like peace, doesn’t just happen; we have to build it, by incorporating DEI principles in our culture, personnel policies, and programming.
