 Valerie Hudson recently wrote, “The surest way to curse one’s nation is to curse its women.” In The First Political Order: How Sex Shapes Governance and National Security Worldwide, Hudson and co-authors, Donna Lee Bowen and Perpetua Lynne Nielsen, investigate how the relationship between men and women shapes the wider political order. Around the world, history records an astonishing variety of forms of social organization. And yet, almost universally, males subordinate females. As decision-makers grapple with shifting political, environmental, demographic, and social landscapes, understanding the promotion of equitable relations between men and women could lead nations towards a path of peace and security.
