Welcome to Manitoba Women for Women of South Sudan’s upcoming fundraiser: Women and Peace in the Era of Covid-19! We are excited to invite two guest speakers, our partners in South Sudan and community members like you to join us in a discussion about gender equality, gender-based violence and community peacebuilding and strategies. Following the speakers, there will be breakout sessions where attendees are encouraged to reflect on discussion based questions, peace, global citizenship, and women’s issues.
All are welcome to attend this upcoming event. It is free of admission, but everyone is encouraged to donate. All the proceeds from this event are funding W4W’s Covid-19 Response Project in South Sudan. We are raising money for a long-term initiative with the purchase of 3-14 sewing machines and sewing materials to help the women in six different locations within South Sudan: Rumbek, Lakes State, Wau, Juba and Western el Bahr Ghazal. Upon receiving these sewing machines and materials, the women who participate in this project will be able to make masks for their family, friends and neighbourhood. These masks will also be distributed in rural areas of South Sudan.
Currently, there is a lack of awareness about the impact of Covid-19 in South Sudan; masks are not being worn and distributed. With this knowledge, W4W is providing educational hygiene and sanitation material — and in partnership with Greenstrings — are providing mask-making training videos for the head seamstress and other female tailors. Altogether, helping women learn how to sew generates a long source of income and empowers South Sudanese women to start up their own business, sell clothing items and mend to their personal clothing needs.
As we know, wearing a mask is a must in order to protect yourself, others and especially those who are immunocompromised. Let’s join together in helping people in South Sudan keep themselves safe from the dangers of the Covid-19 pandemic!
