The past decade has seen a paradigm shift in global understanding of the impacts of the atrocity of conflict-related sexual violence, particularly in terms of its relevance to international peace and security, the multisectoral services needed by survivors, the imperative need for gender-responsive security sector reform, and the necessity of tackling gender inequality as a root cause in times of war or conflict, and in times of peace. While the silence has been broken, and the issue has galvanized global S/2020/487 4/29 20-03863 attention on conflict-related sexual violence as an obstacle to peacebuilding and recovery, we must never allow these atrocities to persist with impunity, to become entrenched and “normalized” in post-conflict societies.
