The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, is a United Nations entity working for the empowerment of women.
Description of task
Under the direct supervision of Regional Advisor for Peace and Security and Humanitarian Response, the UN Volunteer will provide technical support in peace and security related initiatives across the Latin American and the Caribbean countries. Additionally, she/he will support internal coordination and promote joint programming amongst the UN agencies and sectors on peace and security.
Eligibility criteria
Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible.
The main duties and responsibilities are:
- Contribute to UN Women’s regional peace and security and humanitarian action work supporting follow up of regional situation, sub regional and country specific situations;
- Support the elaboration of project proposals, concept notes, presentations and other working documents related with peace and security and humanitarian actions with special focus on peacebuilding;
- Support assistance to country offices, coordination with other agencies and engagement with civil society, in particular women and youth organizations, on peace and security and humanitarian action as requested;
- Participate in relevant national fora, regional inter-agency groups, advocacy platforms, etc. providing regular feedback for effective planning and partnership building;
- Support the organization of events and initiatives on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of UNSC Resolution 1325 and its interphase with the celebration of Beijing + 25.
- Represent UN Women in meetings and facilitate regional policy dialogues on issues related to peace and security and humanitarian action, as delegated;
- Identify best practices and lessons learned to guide programme improvement and strategy planning, support systematization of regional and national initiatives for the implementation of women, peace and security agenda in the LAC Region;
- Support the development of knowledge products to provide a more comprehensive analysis of the subject of peace and security and humanitarian action, including peace building and conflict prevention in the LAC Region; and
- Any other duties as assigned by the Regional Advisor on Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
- Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
- Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
- Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
- Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
- Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
- Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Required degree level: Master degree or equivalent in politics, development studies, human rights, international law, gender studies
Required experience: 24 Months
- At least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in development programme/project implementation, coordination and capacity building.
- Experience on peace and security (among others, women in the security sector; peacekeeping; human rights defenders; migration and mixed flows; peace building, conflict prevention; mediation; UNSCR on women, peace and security; transitional justice; rule of law; youth, peace and security; criminality; trafficking on women and girls; violent extremism and countering terrorism) and/or humanitarian action (among others, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, environmental governance, emergency response and women environmental defenders matters.
- Experience in coordinating work with partners, including development partners, UN Agencies, women’s organizations etc. is required.
- Good knowledge of UN Women and the UN system is highly recommended.
- Experience in gender equality mainstreaming and women empowerment initiatives is highly recommended.
- Knowledge of the socio political and economic reality, opportunities and challenges of the Latin American region is highly recommended.
- Experience in the development and implementation of interagency initiatives would be an asset.
