For almost 100 years, Simavi has been working for equality and the human rights of women and girls to water and sanitation. It does this together with partners in 10 African and Asian countries. Simavi's goal is a world in which all women and girls can exercise their right to water and sanitation, resulting in a healthier and more just society. In a rapidly changing world grappling with major crises in the areas of climate, health and human rights, Simavi focuses on three areas where it believes it can achieve the greatest impact with its projects, lobbying and campaigns: equality, climate and power. Simavi wants to increase the involvement and leadership of women in water and sanitation. It believes that women's and girls' access to climate-resilient water and sanitation is at the heart of climate justice. It is also convinced that women's voices and expertise are crucial for change when it comes to water and sanitation. Its work is part of the Sustainable Development Goals and Simavi focuses specifically on three interconnected SDGs: water and sanitation (SDG6); gender equality (SDG5) and climate (SDG13).
Simavi is looking for a research consultant to support the Gender & WASH research programme that has been conducted in Uganda, Bangladesh and Nepal. Currently, Simavi has finalised three country research studies that have explored Violence against Women & Girls (VAWG) & gender-based violence (GBV) in relation to the use of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) resources.
A particular need has now been identified around consolidating the three country studies into one academic publication, to provide a cross country viewpoint.
The goal is to submit the publication to a relevant academic (WASH) journal, thereby increasing the visibility and credibility of Simavi as an expert on the nexus between WASH and gender.
Scope of task
- Review all three final country research reports.
- Update literature review of academic publications in the last five years on the WASH and gender nexus.
- Distill key findings from the country research reports as relevant to the discussions, arguments and debates that are going on in the academic literature.
- Convene with original country researchers to vet key findings and to discuss the significance and implications of the results.
- Scan potential journals for publications and conferences and/or forums to present the consolidated research and liaise with Simavi on final decision of (selection of) journals.
- Draft the consolidated research article (6000-8000 words- depending on journal requirement). Simavi will share for comments and feedback with 1) authors, 2) external reviewers experienced in academic publications/editorial boards and 3) topic experts.
- Incorporate feedback and finalise the research article, and submit to Simavi team/upload on line.
- Respond to comments from journal editors (up to two rounds), revise and resubmit.
