The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Policy Associate to advance the mission of centering women in all global policy and debates on climate change, particularly in conflict-affected and fragile settings. The Policy Associate will play an integral role in GIWPS’ cross-cutting climate security work and serve as policy analyst on issues related to the intersection of gender, climate change and Women, Peace and Security, including identifying priority areas for action. Drawing on a background in gender-responsive approaches to climate security, the Policy Associate will utilize their expertise to conduct high level policy analysis to track, analyze, and write on global policies and trends, and propose innovative recommendations for addressing challenges posed by the climate crisis. The Policy Associate for Gender and Climate Security will work closely with the Climate Research Fellow to collect and analyse data, evaluate the impact of existing policies and practice, and translate research findings for diverse stakeholders in ways that generate policy impact. They will also serve as the focal point for the Institute’s policy advocacy and engagement related to climate change.

The ideal candidate will have substantive expertise on the gendered dimensions and impacts of climate change, particularly in conflict-affected and fragile contexts, and the corresponding policy implications and solutions for these challenges. The Policy Associate must be familiar with current climate security policies and debates, as well as international climate policy and diplomacy efforts, including working knowledge of the UNFCCC and COP. Candidates should also have working knowledge of how climate change relates to other relevant U.S. and international policy frameworks, including the U.N. Women, Peace and Security Agenda, Sustainable Development Goals, U.S. Global Fragility Act etc.

Work Interactions

The Climate Policy Associate will report directly to the Climate Research Fellow and be a member of the research team, which is under the supervision of the Director of Research. The Associate will collaborate with the Director of Communications, Director of Policy & Programs, the Policy & Programs Manager, as well as the Managing Director and the Executive Director.

Requirements and Qualifications

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and two to five years of experience with policy analysis and advocacy, or equivalent combination of work experience and education. A Master’s degree in a relevant field is strongly preferred. In addition to technical expertise on gender and climate security, it is essential that candidates have a demonstrated ability to write for policy audiences, including leveraging an evidence-based case for policy impact. The Policy Associate must also be able to work independently, as well as collaboratively across teams.

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, international development, climate change, gender studies, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, or related field and at least 2-5 years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Technical expertise in gender and climate change and knowledge of the Women, Peace and Security field.
  • Demonstrated ability to write for a policy audience and translate academic work for policymakers and diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships.
  • Experience organizing and convening programs and events for policy impact is desirable.
