The UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls is preparing its annual thematic report on the issue of climate change and the rights of women and girls. The report will examine the differentiated impacts of climate change on women and girls, including the ways in which climate change interacts with and exacerbates pre-existing gender inequalities and discrimination. The report will also consider the roles, participation and leadership of women and girls in climate action, as well as examine how laws, policies, programmes and measures that address climate change can be designed and implemented while respecting women’s and girls’ rights, avoiding amplifying existing inequalities and without creating new forms of discrimination. In essence, the report will strive to clarify what climate obligations require when interpreted through the lens of women’s rights, substantive equality and intersectionality, and what gender-responsive and gender-transformative climate action entails in law and practice.
